One of the most under-rated parts of dieting is knowing what the right foods are to eat. Most of us assume that we know what is contained in the foods we eat, but do you know the exact diet you should be enjoying if you are trying to build muscle? A high protein low carb diet is the perfect thing if you are trying to pack on the muscle while you burn fat at the same time. Let’s take a look at a few of the items you should be stuffing away in your freezer.
Protein is found in many different foods, but lean meats such as beef, skinless chicken, and even in pork and fish are the best sources. Since meat can be prepared in a million different ways, you should never be stuck eating the same thing over and over again. You want your meat to be lean so it isn’t soaked in saturated fat. You are trying to build muscle here, so limit your fat intake and try to have one serving of lean meat at every meal. At breakfast, especially, you’ll want to ensure that you are providing your body with the fuel it will need to function for the rest of the day.
Speaking of breakfast, eggs are another excellent source of protein. There is a reason why football players start every day with a 3- (or 6- or 9-) egg omelette packed with meat and vegetables. Along with eggs, you can also enjoy peanut butter as a source of protein, but you want to make it the natural kind without any added sugar. The problem with enjoying peanut butter in the mornings is that you often want it on toast, which, as we can see from the next paragraph, isn’t a good idea.
Avoid Breads & Starches
Your carbs come from several different areas. Most people, when they start a high protein, low carb diet, assume that they are going to have trouble staying away from sweets. They then find out that they are lying in bed at night dreaming about freshly baked breads, doughnuts, pastries, and pretzels. It is the breads that you need to avoid more than any other food group for this type of diet. When you sit down and realize how prevalent those foods are in your day (rice, pasta), it can really limit what you enjoy.
So, if you are feeling limited by what you eat because of this high protein low carb diet, it is time to get creative. Many of us stumble on diets because we think there are only a handful of foods we can eat. This is not the case. In fact, there are hundreds of food items that we just don’t know about. The Internet is an incredible resource for recipes, ideas, motivation, and just about everything else. Get to the grocery store and pick up some fresh veggies, some nice lean meats, and get cooking. There will be some disasters along the way but there will also be some amazing victories, too. Your diet will thank you and so will your waistline.
