People often wonder how to get a flat stomach.  Perhaps no single attribute is more synonymous with health and being in good shape quite like the “six pack,” which is a bit ironic when you think about it since most food items that come in six packs, like beer and pop, tend to pack on the pounds.

A flat stomach is the Holy Grail for millions of people out there, but is it really obtainable? For the most part, the answer is yes. If you have a glandular problem or some other kind of health issue that prevents you from losing weight, then it may be more difficult. For the rest of us, a six pack is all about self-discipline. If you can do an extra 20 minutes of Pilates and push away from the dessert cart, a flat stomach can be yours.

The first step to getting a flat stomach has nothing to do with dumbbells or crunches and everything to do with Ding Dongs and Crunch Berries. If you want to get in shape, you have to eat right. Stay away from processed meals, high sodium contents, fast foods, high fructose corn syrup, and trans fats.

Instead, fill your fridge and your body with green, leafy veggies, ripe fruits, whole grains, lean meats, and other things your mom has been telling you to eat since you were three. You don’t have to give up your favorite things “cold turkey,” (although turkey is good for you!); simply have smaller portions less often. Once you have mastered what goes into your body, you can switch your focus to how it looks on the outside.

Next, you need to understand that the two essential methods to obtaining the six pack of your dreams aren’t mutually exclusive. You need to: a) burn fat; and b) build muscle.

Exercises like crunches, sit-ups, and other backbreaking routines are often good at building muscle but not getting rid of your paunch. On the flip side, swimming, Pilates, aerobics, and cardio-heavy exercises will melt fat but not really build any muscle.

You can choose to do one first, and then the other, or you can do both at the same time. It is important to note that if you choose to do both at the same time, you might actually look fatter in the mirror at first as you build muscle under your tummy. This can be extremely disheartening to many people who don’t understand that muscle building often progresses much faster than fat burning.

One major setback that many people who are trying to figure out how to get a flat stomach suffer from is an inability to genuinely see their progress. Unlike other exercise goals, such as losing weight, building a six pack isn’t as quantifiable.

A good idea to heed, now that everyone owns a digital camera or three, is to take weekly pictures of yourself and then compare them side by side. That way, you can actually see, week by week, how your body is changing. Otherwise, you may be left to wait for your abs to actually immerge, and often times, people have long since given up by then. Patience and determination are key.
