How to Build Muscles

We have all seen those workout shows that feature men and women who seem to have bulging muscles in places most of us can only dream about. A good road map for how to build muscles should be part of everyone’s exercise routine, even if you are looking mainly at burning fat and getting in shape.

Building muscle makes our bodies stronger and helps make us healthier as well. If you are considering starting a diet and exercise regimen, head to your local store and pick up some free weights (not free as in they don’t cost anything, but free as in they aren’t connected to machinery). It could be the start of a whole new you. Here are just a few things you need to keep in mind if you are thinking about building muscle as part of your diet.

State of Mind

First, building muscle is hard work. There may be shortcuts for losing fat like liposuction, but there really aren’t any when it comes to building muscle. Even those professional athletes that choose to use steroids have to work out for hours per day.

If you are serious about building muscle, you need to enter into a state of mind that prepares you for the road ahead. Building muscle takes work, but that work can be challenging, fun, and one of the best times you’ve ever had.  The rewards from having a great looking and strong body will make all the effort you put in very worthwhile.

Self-Discipline

Working hand in hand with being in the right state of mind is self-discipline. There will be times when you feel like giving up, times when you look in the mirror and you don’t see much of a difference in how you look. There are ways you can push through this resistance, however.

Think about taking pictures of yourself every week so you can compare what you body looks like side by side. Next, try to work out with a partner or someone who can go through the same process as you at the same time. Chances are, your workout partner will see changes in your body long before you are able to.  You can be a support system for each other.

Diet

Every muscle building exercise needs a good diet behind it. Your body is going to need a lot of fuel if you are serious about working out and building muscle. The menu is going to call for a lot of lean meats, eggs, peanut butter, and other sources of protein. Breakfast is especially important because it acts as a launching pad for the rest of your day.

Exercise

As important as muscle building is, you need to burn fat, as well. If you don’t, you may actually appear in the mirror to be getting fatter since you will be building muscle under your fat, but not burning any of the fat away. Choose cardio for bursts as long as you can. Swim, bike, and run, or choose other low impact activities such as elliptical training.

Many people skip the fat burning part of this routine because they are so preoccupied with lifting weights, but fat burning is the other side of the same coin. Knowing and implementing how to build muscles is a full body approach to health that involves all of the steps mentioned above. Miss one step in how to build muscles, and you are missing out on your full potential.
