Without a doubt, one of the most ironically named parts of the human body is the love handle. Everyone knows that this extra flab is named for the space where most people wrap their arms around a person to give them a hug.

Love handles, though, are often unsightly bags of fat that hang off the body like unwelcome parasites. It is impossible to target fat when you work out, but there are a number of exercises and changes you can make to reduce the amount of fat that you have and allow you to get rid of love handles.

These exercises and techniques will reduce the appearance of your love handles.

Diet

First of all, you need to change the way you eat and the way you approach food. If you have love handles or any other extra fat deposits around your body, you are simply taking in more calories than you are burning. That needs to stop, and it can with just a few simple changes to what you ingest.

Start by significantly increasing your vegetable intake from zero servings per day to five or so. Also, put away the soda, the beer, and the sugary drinks. The brain tumor you’ll get from switching to diet drinks is far lighter than the fat you’ll carry around from drinking soda all day long. Or you could do something really crazy, like forego the tumor and drink water. Remember, what you eat is just as important as the exercises you do to lose those love handles.

Cardio

Next, you need to burn fat and nothing burns fat faster than a cardio workout routine. The great thing about cardio is that there are a dozen and one exercises that fit under the cardio banner. If you prefer to swim, jog, run, bike, or do aerobics for long periods of time, you are set to go. Cardio helps boost your metabolism which helps your body burn fat faster.

Even if you don’t have love handles to lose, injecting some cardio into your routine will melt fat and add years onto your life. If you have trouble with joints, you can choose to do elliptical training or biking since they are low or no impact exercises that still get your blood flowing. You may notice that once you stat a cardio routine, you won’t want to stop.

Weights

Your next step on the way to a life without love handles is to try and build muscle in the areas where your love handles are. Most of the exercises that target this area are crunches and other similar exercises. If you aren’t sure how to do a crunch, don’t worry; they are simple to learn and they are great muscle builders.

Start by lying flat on your back and pointing your toes up at the ceiling with your legs in the air. Take your arms and cross them across your chest and then take your elbows and use them to touch your knees. This crisscross motion is excellent for building muscle and lets you get rid of love handles.
